Rolling Stone, Miller Team for Flawed Promotion
Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino and Jimi Hendrix have been credited with creating rock n’ roll, but Miller Brewing Co. has created a controversy by promoting an all-White celebration of rock music. A recent Miller Brewing Co. promotion in partnership with Rolling Stone magazine chose to celebrate the “50th Anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roll” by featuring Rolling Stone cover shots of Elvis Presley, Blondie, Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton and Willie Nelson on Miller beer cans.

They did that even though six of the first 10 rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame inductees: Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino and Little Richard were Black.

Miller now admits that it erred in not including Blacks in the promotion. “We took a hard look at the situation and realize where we fall short. You can count on Miller to step up,” Virgis Colbert, Miller’s executive vice president of worldwide operations said.

The commemorative can series is only one aspect of the campaign. Another aspect is “Rock Through Time”—a two-day New York City concert featuring James Brown, Bo Diddley, Wyclef Jean and Lenny Kravitz will be held September 17-18 at Roseland Ballroom. “We regret what happened and we would have definitely done things differently if we would have realized the potential harm,” says Larry Waters, manager of corporate relations for Miller Brewing Co.

He said the exclusion of Black artists had everything to do with licensing. “We tried to secure a list of legends, including Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and James Brown, but for various reasons permission [to use their images] wasn’t granted,” Waters said. “Obviously, we should have pursued it further.”

Waters claims that several artists didn’t want to be associated with an alcoholic beverage company, or simply didn’t respond to Rolling Stones inquiries.

lovett, hiatt, ely and clark co-headline songwriters tour

Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt have wrapped up their respective summer tours and will join fellow singer-songwriters Joe Ely and Guy Clark for a joint run through October.

The co-headline outing is a reprise of dates that the quartet played earlier in the year. Lovett continues to support his debut effort for Lost Highway records, "My Baby Don't Tolerate," released in the fall of 2003. Likewise, Ely and Hiatt are touring behind their mid-2003 releases "Streets of Sin" and "Beneath This Gruff Exterior," respectively.

Hiatt has spent part of 2004 on the road as a solo-acoustic act, without his usual band, The Goners. In a conversation with the Rocky Mountain News' Mark Brown in June, Hiatt said he's been using the intimate staging to work out and record songs for a planned January album release.

steve earle tour hits the road

Alt-country maverick Steve Earle merges his music and activism into a fall tour and weekly radio show, all keyed to the recent release of his latest studio collection, "The Revolution Starts ... Now."

Earle's tour activity behind "Revolution" got a head start with his participation Saturday (9.18) in Farm Aid's 19th almost-annual gathering at the White River Amphitheatre near Seattle. The show featured its standard lineup of Farm Aid founders Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, along with guests that included Earle, Dave Matthews Band, Lucinda Williams, Trick Pony and Jerry Lee Lewis.

"Revolution" continues a prolific release schedule for Earle, coming on the heels of 2002's "Jerusalem," the 2002 outtakes package "Sidetracks" and 2003's double-live CD and DVD "Just an American Boy."

In "Revolution," Earle continues his decidedly liberal political focus, and expands his platform from the live stage to the radio studio. In August, Earle began hosting a weekly, hour-long,Sunday-night show on the Air America network, also called "The Revolution Starts ... Now."

Earle and his band, The Dukes, will drop in to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco on Oct. 2-3 (performing as Steve Earle and the Bluegrass Dukes for the occasion), where they'll join the like of Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Nick Lowe, Ollabelle and Gillian Welch. From there, the tour moves on to clubs and theatres through October, before heading to Europe for November and December.

news:: country, opry star dies//rem works with i-tunes on prerelease track

Skeeter Davis, a veteran of the Grand Ole Opry, died Sunday (Sept. 19), at Nashville's St. Thomas Hospital. She was 73.

Davis scored her first solo hit in 1958 with the Chet Atkins-produced "Lost to a Geisha Girl," which reached No. 15 on Billboard's country singles chart. Davis scored a huge crossover hit in 1962 with "The End of the World." John Mellencamp covered the song on his most recent album.

Beyond reaching No. 2 on the country chart, the track also hit No. 1 on Billboard's adult contemporary tally, No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No. 4 on the R&B list.Other country hits included "(I Can't Help You) I'm Falling Too" (No. 2, 1960) and "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" (No. 8, 1964).

Davis married and divorced three times, first to Kenneth Depew, then to Ralph Emery, host of the television show "Nashville Now," and later to NRBQ bassist Joey Spampinato. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, original home of the Grand Ole Opry.
